Southern Ocean Sea Band – Sea Shanties
October 5, 2019 @ 3:30 pm - 8:00 pm$26
The Southern Ocean Sea Band will present a free half hour Sea Shanty Singing Session where audience members are invited to learn about the history of the song form and then participate by singing along with both some of the old traditional classics of the genre and those newly written by the band themselves.
Later in the evening the 9-piece band will perform a ticketed concert version of their longer shanty-inspired folk songs. Telling the stories and tales of characters and events in their home town and district, the band will romp through an engaging hour of music.
The Southern Ocean Sea Band are a 9-piece band from the small fishing village of Port Fairy, on Victoria’s South-West Coast.
They will take you on a maritime journey into their hometown’s historical stories & legends. The band was inspired in 2015 by the late great Folk Artist and Historian Danny Spooner’s ‘Shanties at the River’ during Port Fairy’s Folk Festival. The band soon developed their shanty-themed songs and tales about their hometown into their debut album ‘Blood & Bones & Fins & Glory’.
View Room, Saturday 5 October. Vocal workshop at 3:30pm for 30 minutes (free with registration), show at 6:30pm (ticketed).
